If you look at the list of the top digital agencies around the world, they have one thing in common. Their business is split between a few areas of expertise including creative, SEO, marketing, social media, technical, ecommerce, media planning/buying, user experience and more. With the surge in online business and marketing that took place a few years ago, digital agencies were popping up everywhere offering services in one or two of a wide range of things. It wasn’t so long ago that a knowledge of HTML and basic code made you an expert in web development and design.

And it was even more recent that basic familiarity with social media platforms and the tools available to win business made you a social media guru and a sought after asset for client and agency side companies alike. But it’s no longer enough to be a specialist in one area of the diverse and broad digital landscape. Agencies have to think about how they can expand their services. This might involve hiring experts to take the reigns of certain departments or it might mean associating themselves with experts in other areas of the field and feeding work to one another.

The industry is growing too quickly for expertise to be limited to one or two things. In addition to having to expand digital offering, agencies need to think more about becoming integrated. This means working online and offline. While digital has made a lot of waves recently (and will only continue to make more), traditional media is still very effective.

If you’re a small agency here are a few ways you might expand. You might not have the budget to start filming TV commercials or recording radio ads. You could however, launch a few small guerrilla marketing campaigns. This will help persuade risk-taking clients that you know how and aren’t afraid to push the envelope. You can work with their budget to launch an effective and edgy marketing campaign, that although small, can be made bigger with all of the online marketing and community building you’re going to do.

Similarly, even without the big budget for a TV commercial it doesn’t mean that you can’t create something memorable on YouTube. The key to video marketing for the web is to be authentic. People aren’t interested in watching flawlessly executed YouTube videos. They want something that’s real. A first take. A home made video or commercial streamed online and marketed through a variety of social channels can generate a lot of public attention for your clients.

So you see there are lots of possibilities even for the smallest agencies on the tightest budgets. The idea is not to limit yourself. Keep brainstorming and being creative and be open minded to all ideas. As for you company directors, don’t hesitate to hand the creative reigns over to an expert if creative thinking isn’t your specialty.

There was a time when search engine optimization was actually not necessary.

Even as late as a decade ago, if you created a Web page anywhere, Google indexed it and you gained visibility in its search results. Your page could have been in one of the free “estates” where anybody could add a page and Google didn’t mind. It could also have been a pure affiliate page with no original content and Google still indexed it.

Things are unrecognizably different now.

Affiliate pages with “cookie-cutter” content duplicated everywhere might never make it to the Google index; the same fate is likely for those pages you throw in on a free-for-all website. And even “proper” websites with your own domain name failed to achieve visibility among the proliferating sites in millions.

These would not have mattered, except for one thing. It was Google that provided the bread and butter for the millions of small businesses that could not afford expensive marketing campaigns. If your site was among the top few sites the appeared before a searcher’s eyes when that person searched for your product, you got hundreds and even thousands of visitors, many of whom even bought your products.

Search engine optimization (SEO) entered the scene. Search engine specialists “reverse-engineered” to identify the factors that Google consider for showing websites at the top of its search results pages. These factors were then consciously incorporated into your Web pages in the hope that Google will show your site among the first ten results it showed on the first page.

As more and more of your competitors adopted search engine optimization practices, things became difficult again. Your position began to slip if your competitors did the SEO better. SEO battles became serious fights with every dirty trick being employed.

There were “black hat” SEO practitioners who showed one page to search engines and another to human visitors. As search engines were not bothered with readability, you could fill the “search engine” page with pure gibberish, but gibberish written in a way that the engine dutifully indexed high.

A war of wits followed between unscrupulous SEO practitioners and search engines. Google changed its ranking algorithms regularly to work around practices that allowed low value content to appear at the top of its search results. After all, Google’s success depended on providing value to searchers, not merchants. And SEO practitioners came up with new tricks.

We will look at search engine optimization in a series of articles, starting off with an overall look at on-line or Web marketing.

Many people build a website or blog with dreams of creating huge amounts of Adsense revenue. These dreams generally finish after months of frantically driving visitors to their sites through marketing campaigns, only failing to convert visits into clicks.

This failure leads to frustration, and ultimately quitting. There is no need to quit. What you need to focus on is how to build your Adsense banners to compliment your blog instead of insulting it. There are some simple ways to increase the amount Adsense revenue you generate.

How to Increase Adsense Revenue

1. Primacy
Primacy is defined as the state of being first, or foremost. People in general have a short attention span, but it gets even shorter when on the web. It is important to have your Adsense banner near the top of the page. If they have to scroll to see it, there is a good chance they will move on before even noticing the banner. This can be hard to do and keep your website looking professional, but it is possible. You may have to forgo this step on some of your pages to keep the integrity of your site.

2. Blending
You should take your time and develop an Adsense banner that will blend into your website. People are more apt to click on an advertisement if they don’t know it’s an ad. If they are interested in the ad, they will click on the link provided without thinking twice. This is also a good way to prevent your website from looking tacky. Garishly colored advertisements are highly noticeable and will increase the bounce rate on your site. It can ruin the look of your site and is an insult to the eyes.

3. Utilize Your Content
If you are able to wrap your content around the advertisements, it will greatly help to increase adsense revenue. The advertisements will look like part of your text. This will make it much more natural for readers to click on an ad. They are already interested in what you have to say, and now they are being given an option to continue on that topic. Increasing Adsense revenue is about providing your readers with good content, and a way to continue exploring that content.

4. Write Keyword Focused Content
The Google Adsense program runs off on content. If you are unable to write specific enough content for Google to know what you are talking about, the ads may be untargeted. This is because Google has to guess. Keywords aren’t just for driving organic traffic, they are essential to obtaining relevant advertisements on your site. Without relevance, your ads will lose meaning.

5. Create Multiple Banners
Different types of people will click on different types of ads. One of the best ways to cater to everyone is to create banners with different styles. You can experiment with each one and see which converts best. There is nothing wrong with a little trial and error.

6. Make Use of Google Adsense Channels
It is important to know which pages are converting and which ones aren’t. Google allows you to create up to 200 channels. Why not utilize them all. This way you can narrow down on your non-earning channels and optimize them through trial and error. Use what Google has to offer. They provide these tools because they want you to succeed. If you are making money, so are they.

7. Traffic
Finally, and obviously, you need to increase traffic. The more traffic you have, the more Adsense revenue you will create. It is as simple as that. Unfortunately gaining that extra traffic is not so simple, but that is a topic for another post.

Increasing Adsense revenue is about perseverance and hard work. You will need to put in the time and effort to try multiple different approaches before you can rest. Learn from others. If you are a fan of a successful blog, see how they did it. Where do they put their banners? Emulate them because they are successful.

When our grandparents arrived in America with their new businesses and ideas they used techniques that were considered revolutionary for their time. Some of the most radical ideas of the 20th century for businesses came in the form of marketing to customers. Everything from TV, Radio, Direct Response, and other innovative strategies were used to build a business. They worked and more and more people used the ideas to form their company. Then times changed again. This time instead of creating national marketing campaigns the world became a little smaller with the advent of the internet.

Now, thanks to social networking all small businesses have the opportunity to reach out to their customers in a more effective and faster method with little to no capital needed. Instead of using a shotgun approach that most advertisers used with more traditional methods of advertisements, we can go onto Facebook and Twitter to find the target markets we want to jump start our business. Here is a way that I use social networking for my business and build connections and business at every step of the way.

First, I find like minded people on Twitter and Facebook that I can connect with immediately. Once I have done this I then send them a direct message, or chat on their wall. The idea here is to start up a conversation that can lead to business.

Second, once I have chatted with them and it looks like we can benefit each other and feel comfortable with each other I like to take the connection to the next level by calling them or emailing them. Get off social media and into a more one-on-one relationship. Think of this like courting a girl. First you have to ask permission to go out with her and then you go out for coffee in order to start connecting.

Third, you continue the relationship off line and continue using those tried and true methods of connecting with your clients via phone, email, and mail.

This is how the personal connections are being created every day online. People reach out to each other and create the basis of a lasting business relationship through a tweet, a Facebook post, or a blog post. This is the wave of the future that will help us all. Enjoy it now!
