In the successive paragraphs I will explain why I consider link building to be over hyped.</P><P>One of the best SEO practice is to create great content. In fact good content is the most important aspect of SEO. Unless the content on your website is good, no matter how many links one gets to their site, it is still not going to perform well unless it has good content. It is not uncommon to come across blogs with articles as short as a 100 words. Also many webmasters spend valuable time creating links, which can be better utilised to create content.</P><P>But it does not mean that link building is a total waste of time. Links are very important for two specific reasons. Firstly, they enhance the search engine rankings and secondly they can also be good sources of traffic for your site, especially if the link is from another related site. Therefore link building cannot be totally done away with.</P><P>While building links it is necessary to pay attention to the quality of the links. It is not necessary to get links from different sources. I have seen some websites ranking very well for some keywords although they have as little as 6-8 links pointing to the website.</P><P>Google simply does not look at the number of links; it also considers the topical relevance of the page which is linking from and of course the page ranks of the site that is linking. Use of keywords as anchor text is also good SEO practice. Apart from this, due to proliferation of SEO spam and bogus links, Google is constantly tweaking its algorithm to weed out sites with poor content.</P><P>Therefore to rank high in Google, the site must have original high quality content which is updated frequently along with a good long term linking strategy. A long term linking strategy involves linking from related sites, article marketing and blog commenting. By building links around good quality content, one can achieve high search engine rankings which will translate into higher numbers of targeted visitors to your site.</P><P>Therefore the main point of this article is not to junk link building but to make it more effective. But the bottom line is: Content Is King.</P></p>
