In Windows 7, Microsoft has included a new desktop customization feature called Aero Themes which enables users to customize the desktop wallpaper with a matching glass color, screensaver, icons and sound scheme of their choice.

Installation Instructions: Double click the downloaded .themepack file to install it. These themes will only work on Windows 7.

The one thing which has not put in an appearance is nice new icon packs for Windows 7. Icons can make the the look and feel of the operating system look very slick and modern.

After doing some research I came across a post on the Windows 7 Forums which had some great sets of icons for Windows 7 which include the install instructions and also an installer program for windows 32bit and 64bit.

To install Mr GRiM’s Glossy Blue Icon Pack, extract the folder called
‘MrGRiMsIcons’ and then run the ‘INSTALL.cmd’ inside the folder.

CREATE BACKUPS!

It’s HIGHLY recommended that you backup the files yourself to a safe
location before proceeding.
The install does create backups and a System Restore Point but if
something was to go wrong (like a power failure during running) you then
have another way out!

Microsoft said on Thursday that it has finished development work on the virtualized version of Windows XP that Windows 7 users can use to run programs that won’t work on the newer operating system.

In a statement, Microsoft said that it has finalized the code for the free “XP Mode” and that the software will be made available on October 22, the same day that Microsoft launches Windows 7.

Computer makers will also be able to offer Windows XP Mode with their systems, Microsoft said.

Microsoft said back in April that it would offer the XP Mode. Aimed primarily at small businesses, the virtualization layer is designed to help ease the transition for those still running programs that don’t work properly with Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

To use the compatibility layer, users need to be running Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, or Windows 7 Ultimate.

The other tricky point is that to use XP mode, consumers also need a machine that has chip level virtualization support and has that feature turned on, something that isn’t always easy for consumers to determine.

At its core, XP Mode consists of two things, the Windows Virtual PC engine and a licensed copy of Windows XP Service Pack 3 as a packaged virtual machine, both of which Microsoft will make available for download.

Microsoft has wanted to kill Windows XP for years. There was only one problem: the users refused to let it die. Now that Windows 7 is almost ready to go, Microsoft is, once more, trying to ax XP.

Microsoft did this to themselves. Vista was a flop. Even now, according to Net Applications’ Market Share, Vista has only a lousy 23% of the desktop market. For a while, Microsoft ignored the fact that even their own executives were horrified by just how bad Vista was. But then the Linux-powered netbook came along, and Microsoft was frightened enough by its early successes that it un-retired Windows XP Home.

Now, Microsoft wants to kill off XP again. Step one will be bringing free support for XP to a close on April 14th. Step two is letting anyone and their uncle get a free copy of the Windows 7 release candidate sometime in May. The timing is by design.

Microsoft is now hanging onto their desktop market-share and gained netbook market-share because they re-released XP Home, but it’s a Pyrrhic victory. The reason XP Home is so popular on netbooks isn’t that it’s better than Linux; it’s because Microsoft is essentially giving XP Home away to netbook vendors. Microsoft can’t afford to keep giving away its products, so XP needs to die as fast as possible so they can start selling users on Windows 7.

Vista? Please. It barely runs on PCs, much less netbooks. It’s Windows 7 or bust as far as Microsoft is concerned.

Will Windows users go along with this and switch to 7? I suspect they will. The XP users aren’t going to be completely happy with the trip though. Windows 7 is a radically cleaned up and skinnier version of Vista. I’ve been using 7 for several months, and it’s a decent operating system. Yes, that’s me, the Linux desktop guy, saying that Windows 7 is OK.

However, Windows 7 looks and feels a lot like Vista, and if you think you can just switch right over from XP to 7 without going through a learning curve, you’re wrong. I think XP users will find it just as easy, or not, to switch to the Novell’s new Windows-friendly SLED (SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop) 11 as to 7.

Windows 7 also has a lot of Vista badness in it still. My compadre Preston Gralla made a good point earlier this year about how if your older hardware didn’t work with Vista, it still won’t work with Windows 7.

So, if you’re an XP user, brace yourself. This time you’re not going to get a XP reprise. One way or another, you’re going to be moving to a new operating system sometime soon. 9) G-alarm : is one of my all time favorite applications. I love my sleep and wont easily wake up with the normal alarm on my phone. This ingenious application will ask you to complete a simple game / puzzle before you can snooze/switch off the alarm. Its definitely worth the asking price of €4.99.

10) Cinemo & Flix : Both these apps are for finding movie showtimes and information. Cinemo works in the US and Canada. While Flix works in UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

11) Shopping Cart : A simple and intuitive shopping list application for Windows Mobile users. Its a finger friendly application and new features are added frequently by the developer. Requires registration.

12) Samsung Caxixi : Is a versatile accelerometer enabled music application for Samsung Windows Mobile devices. It plays the sounds of a variety of instruments and the sounds are triggered by shaking the phone using a variety of gestures. 13) Scramble : is a Windows Mobile App for puzzle solvers. If you love a good puzzle then you will love this game. It offers different modes and difficulty and is quite finger friendly.
