Rasi bintang ini sangat mudah dikenali dengan bentuk seperti alat pembajak sawah atau seorang pemburu dengan panah menghadap ke atas. Waktu pengamatan terbaik antara pukul 02.00 dan 05.00. Meski namanya hujan meteor, jangan berharap melihat kilatan-kilatan meteor setiap saat. Dari sekian banyak pecahan meteor yang melintas dekat Bumi, mungkin hanya puluhan yang terlihat setiap jamnya. Jadi, siap-siap saja melihat langit berlama-lama. Tetap santai, tetapi saksama.

Hujan meteor Orionid ini berasal dari pecahan-pecahan komet 1P/Halley yang tersebar di orbit selama perjalanannya mendekati Matahari. Setiap Oktober, Bumi melintasi orbit tersebut sehingga sejumlah partikelnya masuk ke atmosfer dan terbakar menjadi meteor.

Walaupun puncak hujan meteor Orionid antara 20 dan 21 Oktober, meteor kemungkinan sudah muncul beberapa hari sebelum dan masih muncul beberapa hari sesudahnya.
